Special Education Law
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the federal law that the State of Nevada
and the local school districts must follow.  There are may web sites dedicated to special education
law, special education services and special needs children. Here are two websites that every
parent or guardian of a special needs child should know about:

The "
Special Education Rights of Parents and Children" is the State of Nevada "rights
handbook" that must be given to parents of special needs children at least once a year and upon
request.  It is not posted on the Clark County School District website. The information in this
handbook is based on the IDEA and was published in 2007. Any earlier handbook that you may
have received from the Clark County School District is "out-of-date" and should not be relied on for
information.

Wrightslaw.com is an excellent web site for parents, advocates and lawyers. It has a "yellow

In Nevada, the Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) and the Nevada Administrative Code (NAC)
contains other educational laws that affect special needs children. Some of the Nevada laws follow
the IDEA and other laws add more protection and rights for students. All state laws must comply
with federal law.
